Allesley is a civil parish some 3 miles north west of the city of Coventry. The suburbs of Ashley Park and Ashley Green today are on the outskirts of the city, but in a much earlier time Ashley Park was a deer park laid out by Henry de Hastings in the 13th century. The village was known to have held a variety of races; the first meeting under rules took place in the Park on Tuesday 10th October 1837. There was a further meeting on Monday 25th March 1839 when the 14th Light Dragoon Steeplechase was won by Mr Dawson’s Humbug, defeating Mr Rich’s Terry O’Rigan and Mr Boucherett’s Flambeau. Later newspaper reports indicated races were held as part of the Statutes week on Tuesday 8th October 1850, while on 3rd August 1899 Hurdle and Obstacle races were held in the Park at Hollyberry Hall.
